Police shut the road between Gobowen and Gledrid, near Oswestry, and urged motorists to avoid the area.

The crash happened just after 9.35am on the Gledrid roundabout, with one person trapped in the wreckage.

Four fire crews from Shropshire were sent to the scene to help release the victim.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "A paramedic in a rapid response vehicle together with a paramedic officer and resources from the Welsh Ambulance Service including the Welsh Air Ambulance attended the scene.

Traffic is diverted onto side roads after the accident

"Sadly, it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save a male patient who was confirmed dead at the scene."

Traffic built up in nearby villages as drivers were diverted from the scene. The road was reopened at about 3pm.

Later a teenage motorist was taken to hospital with serious injuries after a crash with a tractor on the A5 near Shrewsbury.
