Barriers coming down as Shropshire flood threat receding

The Environment Agency said it expected the barriers to be removed by 4pm.

Flood alerts had earlier been in place in Shrewsbury, Crew Green, Montford, Welsh Bridge, Buildwas and Bridgnorth.

Long stay and riverside car parks were temporarily closed as the barriers were put up in Frankwell, Shrewsbury, while the Environment Agency also warned Gravel Hill Lane and Sydney Avenue could still be affected by flood water.

Fire chiefs have urged farmers to move livestock to higher ground after five crews were called to two separate incidents where animals had to be rescued from floods over the weekend.

A horse was trapped in a field in Didcot Close in Shrewsbury on Sunday morning just before 9am.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said five fire crews including the rescue tender and the water rescue unit took 10 minutes to rescue the animal.

Five fire appliances were also sent from Shrewsbury and Wellington to rescue a sheep stranded by flood water at Uffington Road in Atcham on Saturday night.

The sheep was reached at 10.30pm after getting stuck on the edge of flood water.

A fire service spokesman said: "Shropshire Fire and Rescue service would urge owners of livestock in fields close to rivers and streams to move them to higher ground as the some animals can be cut off."
