Hereford Road was closed while engineers and police were are at the scene, at the junction of Roman Road and Upper Road.

Severn Trent said that water supplies were affected as a result in the SY2 and SY3 areas, with the Meole and Belle Vue areas left without water or low pressure

Water was seen streaming down Roman Road onto Hereford Road close to the BP garage. The Clay Oven and Rainbow Connection Hair Salon had water lapping at their doorways.

A Severn Trent spokesman said: "This morning we've discovered a burst water pipe on junction of Roman Road and Upper Road, Shrewsbury which may be causing water supplies to be off or at low pressure for some of our customers in SY2 or SY3.

"Our teams are out on site now and will work around the clock to get this pipe fixed and everything back to normal as quickly as possible.

"We're hoping that most customers will have their supply back on in the next few hours."

This afternoon, Sarah McArthur, spokeswoman for Severn Trent, said: "After the work we have been carrying out today we have restored water to 50 per cent of the customers affected.

"We are also rezoning the water supplies around to get the majority of people back up and running as soon as possible.

"At the height of the problems were received 700 calls from customers and about half of those now have their water supply back on.

"We would hope the remaining issues would be sorted out within the hour."
