Letter: Number of accidents at lights no mystery

I have followed with  interest the arguments between Lawley Parish Council and the Highways Department of Telford and Wrekin Council about the number of accidents at the Lawley Village lights, the reasons for these, and the suggestion that the junction should be removed and returned to a traffic island.

I do, however, wonder whether any of the parties involved ever drive down West Centre Way, looking at the signs and the way they send the traffic?

The first set of lights allow you to turn left into Hunters Rise (for the doctors) or right into Morrisons.

The second set, however, show a No left turn (into a dead end) and a No right turn. This is absolutely ludicrous when the right turn (the alternative to which is to go into the main junction and do a dangerous 'U' turn) goes into Birchfield Way, accessing not only the shops and food outlets, but an estate of newly- built houses on Barrack Close, Birchfield Way and Poyner Court.

As there is no other access route to these homes, and they must be receiving visits from the council services and emergency services, why has no-one flagged this up as an issue and altered the signs?

I would also add that a further factor is the fault of the council, as they have taken a free-flow traffic system and ruined it by putting traffic lights (that are left running when street lights are turned off to save money) on roundabouts, totally ruining the natural traffic flow.

This has now nurtured the dangerous culture of going through lights at red.

And as for the two-way town centre – blind or barmy?
