Letter: A Giant advantage

Why Shropshire Star readers chose the Wrekin Giant.

Published

The name comes from an ancient myth which is the tale of The Wrekin Giant, it is a Shropshire legend and enjoyed by many people.

The Wrekin Giant - 676 votes (37.3%)

The Flying Salopian - 469 votes (25.8)

Floreat Salopia - 353 votes (19.5%)

Wilfred Owen - 219 votes (12.1%)

Evolution - 96 votes (5.3%)

Of course we all know that the story is not true. Based on a recent article by Bryan Weaver, it has been said that the name may be a bad omen for the new Virgin train, because of the nature of this ancient myth.

But that can be said for pretty much anything that has ever been named after a story. The Giant's Causeway for example – I'm sure when tourists go there they are not worried that a Scottish Giant is going to appear from nowhere and attack them or the rocks are going to fall beneath them because the whole place is named after that very myth.

The name is not solely named just after the story it's also been named with the people of Shropshire in mind, and didn't win highest votes for nothing.

Most people from Shropshire will speak of how seeing the Wrekin reminds them of coming home from whatever adventure they may have been on, and it's true, it's a very iconic feature in Shropshire.

The same aspect can be said about leaving Shropshire for the journey ahead, most people will pass the Wrekin in many directions, so again it's this theory of travel and home that only belongs to the people of Shropshire when they see the Wrekin.

Once the train is up and running you will be able to see the Wrekin from the windows of the train, on the way to London and on the way back home.

Also the word Giant shows the aspect of a giant leap for Shropshire, and just how much opportunity the new train is going to bring.
