Sean Cooke was seen to throw a series of "fast and hard" punches at victim Andrew Deakin in a corridor of The Buttermarket in Shrewsbury in May this year.

Mr Deakin suffered serious facial injuries leaving him with plates in his jaw, a scar to his face and ringing in his ears.

At Shrewsbury Crown Court Cooke was jailed for two years after admitting a charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm.

The court heard that Cooke, 25, of Judith Butts Gardens in Monkmoor, Shrewsbury, had a previous conviction for wounding for which he was jailed four years ago.

Recorder Nicholas Daly said the previous conviction and alcohol were aggravating features in the assault during which the victim was unable to defend himself.

The court heard that the two men had known each other for about five years and Mr Deakin had said that they got on well.

Mr Robert Edwards, prosecuting, said the two men had spoken and were later in the toilets and Mr Deakin said there was nothing he did to provoke the defendant.

But in the corridor outside, Mr Deakin was struck on the right side of his jaw, went to the ground and was stunned.

"The defendant was standing over him and punched him again and again to the left side of his jaw," said Mr Edwards.

The incident was caught on CCTV which was shown to the court and Mr Edwards said that the attack was witnessed by club doorman Craig Jones.

The court heard that when Mr Jones tried intervene the defendant said: "I'll cave your head in as well".

Cooke was described by Mr Jones as being "angry, mad and out of control".

Miss Emma Lineton, for Cooke, said that whatever was said to her client it could not justify his actions and he accepted he had anger management issues which were made worse by drink.
