The man in his 70s was rescued after the fire broke out at a house in the centre of Knighton on the Shropshire/Mid Wales border.

The nature of his injuries are not known, but they are said to be serious.

Firefighters spent two hours putting out the fire at a house in George Road after being called to the scene at about 6.30pm.

Richard Timothy, spokesman for the Welsh Ambulance Service, said the pensioner was flown to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital in a RAF helicopter.

A spokesman for Dyfed-Powys Police said the fire was not being treated as suspicious.
