The man, who was wearing dark clothing and had covered his face, threatened a 32-year-old shop worker before making his getaway in a dark-coloured car.

It is not yet known how much cash was taken or whether the gun was real or a replica.

No-one at the Corner Shop in Morda Bank, Morda, near Oswestry, was prepared to talk about the raid. But residents have been left shocked by the robbery, which happened between 7.10pm and 8pm on Saturday.

Police have arrested two women, aged 30 and 25, in connection with the raid. They have both been bailed and were due to report to Shrewsbury police station today.

Officers investigating the robbery have also urged landowners and residents to look out for items they believe may have been dumped in fields or country lanes. They include an Easy Scanner tillscreen and two charity boxes – one belonging to Hope House Children's Hospice and the other for Shock for Life.

The robber, who is believed to have made off in the direction of Trefonen, is described as white, about 5ft 9in tall and of slim build. Police believe he may also have ditched clothing.

Sarah Lynch, spokeswoman for West Mercia Police, said some of the clothes they were looking for included cross-hatched dark trainers with a light-coloured sole, dark jogging bottoms, a black Superdry jacket, dark gloves, and a stocking-type face mask.

She said: "We are asking farmers and members of the public to look out for the items and the clothing and to contact police if they see them."

Villagers today came out in support of workers at the shop.

Louise Evans, 34, from Lower Belle Vue, said: "It's bad. I feel sorry for them. I couldn't believe it when I heard. It's a bit too close to home really."
