Focus Hotels has taken over the management and ownership of the four-star, 87-bedroom Mercure Shrewsbury Albrighton Hall hotel and spa, near Shrewsbury.

The hotel had been on the market for offers in the region of £3.9 million.

Upgrades are expected to include renovations to the hotel bedrooms, entrance, spa, wedding and conference facilities.

Peter Cashman, chief executive at Focus Hotels, said he believes the historic property has "fantastic potential".

He said: "We are delighted to be taking over the ownership and management of the Mercure Shrewsbury Albrighton Hall Hotel & Spa, a beautiful and historic property which we believe has fantastic potential.

"We are very excited about our development plans, and have funds already in place to make them a reality – and with the benefit of Focus Hotels' management expertise, I and my fellow investors have complete confidence in the success of this project," he said.

The hotel – an 18th-century former manor house, set in 15 acres of landscaped grounds and overlooking a lake – is three miles from Shrewsbury town centre.

It currently offers 87 bedrooms, a restaurant, a bar, spa and fitness centre as well as seven meeting rooms with the capacity to host meetings, events and weddings for up to 400 people.

Gavin Wright, director of hotels at estate agents Christie & Co, who negotiated the purchase, said: "The Mercure Albrighton Hall is an excellent acquisition for Focus Hotels, adding to its other hotels. The hotel attracted a lot of interest and we received multiple offersfollowing our marketing process.

"The continued improvements in the economy have resulted in our Hotel team being busier than ever. All indications are that Christie & Co will have its most successful year for hotel transactions."

Founded in 2007, Focus Hotels also manages 17 other three- and four-star hotels across the UK, operating under the brands Mercure, Ibis, Styles by Accor and DoubleTree by Hilton.
