The 92-year-old lost the World War Two Greek campaign medal at a Remembrance Day service in Shropshire.

But after an appeal in the Shropshire Star, his plight was aided by a mystery Good Samaritan, who handed it in to St Chad's Church in Shrewsbury.

It is believed the medal fell in the church when Mr Medlicott attended a service to mark Remembrance Day.

He today said he was "over the moon" that his heartfelt plea was answered, adding: "I'm very pleased. I just want to say thank you."

His son Nick said: "I would just like to express our thanks to both the Shropshire Star and the person who found it for getting it back to my father. It really means a lot to us both.

"He had all his other medals on his chest but this one he had loose in his cap.

"I think he dropped it on the ground. It was only later he realised his Greek medal was missing. He had been carrying it separately from his main medals and put it in his para beret, which it presumably fell out of in the church."

Marianne Brown, of St Chad's said: "One of the parishioners found a medal and held onto it to keep it safe. When they saw in the paper that Mr Medlicott had lost it they gave it to us. We are really pleased that he's got it back."

Born in Church Stretton, Mr Medlicott served during World War Two in a number of campaigns including ones in Italy and Greece. After the war he relocated to London where he worked as a butcher. He retired back to Shrewsbury and was a car park attendant at St Chad's.
