Oswestry Homebase store to close next year

Oswestry's Homebase is set to close next year. Staff at the store on Shrewsbury Road have been told of the decision.

But they have been reassured that the company will try to find positions for them in other parts of the business.

Homebase spokeswoman Lexie Dabney said: "Homebase can confirm that the business has entered a period of consultation with colleagues regarding the proposed assignment of the Oswestry Homebase store lease to another retailer.

"This proposed transfer is part of our plan to reduce store numbers to help enable us to have a smaller but stronger business, better positioned to support future investment and realise potential for greater growth."

Town mayor Councillor Gareth Jones said he will be sad to see the shop go. He said: "It's sad for the people of Oswestry. It's sad but it's a trend of the times.

"I hope they can guarantee the jobs for people who are working there.

"I'm sorry to see them go but if they can transfer the jobs to somewhere else that's good."
