The schoolgirl managed to get away and told an adult, who called the police.

The girl was walking between the rugby club and Edgeley Road towards the park on Wayland Road at the time.

Police say the man arrested in connection with the incident has been granted bail until December 4.

Investigations are ongoing into whether the incident, which happened between 3pm and 3.30pm last Thursday, is linked to an assault on an 11-year-old girl in Park Road in the town on the afternoon of August 30.

Police have not given any details of that assault, although they said at the time the girl was not injured and the man ran away, covering his face with his T-shirt.

Councillor Rob Hewson, mayor of Whitchurch, said: "It's obviously a shame this has happened. But Whitchurch is a very safe town and hopefully these are rare cases.

"I would like to thank the police for acting so swiftly."

Anyone with information about either incident should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
