Developers Blackfriars plan to submit their bid for a 26,000 sq ft store after officers at Shropshire Council judged an environmental survey at the site would not be needed.

It comes despite the proposals sparking outrage from town centre traders, residents, and local politicians, who have united in opposition to it. They say the supermarket would "kill trade" in the town centre.

The plans were discussed last night by members of Ludford Parish Council, and a final decision will be made at a future meeting of Shropshire Council's south planning committee.

Simon Hoare, acting as agent for developers Blackfriars, said Shropshire Council officers had made a decision on an initial screening application.

"The response was that we do not require an environmental impact assessment," he said. "That's obviously good news.

"The next step will be moving forward to a submission, which we expect to be doing in the next week to 10 days.
