Fireworks fun extravaganza at Donnington display

Thousands turned out again for the huge bonfire and fireworks extravaganza in Donnington - but organisers today refused to say if it will be back for a 35th year in 2015.

An admission charge of £2 was introduced for the first time this year at the event, held on Broadoaks Playing Field.

Organisers Alf and Jenny Mitchell said they had no option but to ditch free entry because of rising costs to run it.

Mrs Mitchell said while definite numbers had yet to be confirmed, she thought the number attending would be very similar to previous years. The popular event normally attracts around 12,000 people.

She said: "I think the admission fee didn't affect us in some ways and it did affect us in others.

"In terms of numbers for instance, while I can't confirm that yet I think we will be pretty much where we were last year and in previous years.

"But I think the admission fee did have a knock-on effect in other areas, such as not paying to go on rides on the funfair. Money is tight and people only have so much."

Mrs Mitchell said despite the fact it had been a successful event again, she could not promise it would return next year.

"We can't say on that yet," she said. "We will have a break now for a couple of weeks, work out what we need to pay and how much it has cost, and then sit down and look to see if it is feasible to run it again next year. It is certainly getting more difficult year on year."
