Elderly woman killed in Shropshire A49 lorry crash

An elderly woman died today after being hit by a lorry on a main road through Shropshire.

The fatal collision happened on the A49 in Church Stretton just after 7am.

The Midlands Air Ambulance landed at the scene but the woman pedestrian was pronounced dead at 7.40am.

The lorry driver was a man in his 60s.

The carriageway was closed at the junction with Sandford Avenue until 1pm.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the collision but no arrests have been made.

Two ambulances together with a paramedic in a rapid response vehicle and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford attended the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Crews attended a road traffic collision involving a lorry and pedestrian.

"Despite resuscitation attempts by medics the patient was later confirmed dead at the scene."
