Dismay as Cosford roadworks reappear
Roadworks on one of Shropshire's busiest trunk roads are being redone , just days after engineers left the site.
Business owners have criticised council chiefs for wasting "time and money" on extensive roadworks on the A41 Newport Road in Cosford.
The initial six-week improvement works changed the road layout outside Budgens of Cosford, which was recently renamed Spar, and Salop Caravans Cosford.
The work included installing new traffic lights, a new pedestrian crossing, a concrete kerb and resurfacing works.
Temporary traffic lights and cones diverting motorists were put in place while engineers worked at the site and motorists faced long delays in the area.
The works took place near the junction of Sydnal Lane.
But Mervyn Hughes, owner of Salop Caravans Cosford, said contractors from Fitzgerald have "moved back in and started digging them up again".
He said: "It is a extreme waste of time and money. They came in and made changes that didn't need to have been made and now they are going back over what they have done.
"They put in a third pedestrian crossing and removed one of the existing ones. They added a new concrete kerb and now they look like they are digging that up as well. It is now worse than it was before.
"We have never had an accident here in 30 years and since these 'improvements' have been in place we witnessed one the other day when a car overturned.
"The traffic lights are now so high you can't even see them from your car.
" I reckon the roadworks have costs around £100,000 at least. The Council must have money to waste and we weren't even consulted about the contractors going back."
A Telford resident, who did not wish to be named, said she was still meeting a lot of traffic in the area following the roadworks.
She said: "I live in Telford and some days coming to work I've been sitting at those traffic lights for 20 minutes.
"When the main works were being done, people who were trying to commute from Telford to Wolverhampton couldn't as they were backed up all round the island near the M54,. It was really dangerous."
Staff at Budgens have also expressed their concerns at workers reappearing at the site. No-one from Shropshire Council was available for comment.
