Bid to share Britain in Bloom joy around Shrewsbury

Britain in Bloom could be taken to more urban residential areas of Shrewsbury in the future as the town looks for a new challenge.

Last month Shrewsbury was crowned Britain in Bloom's Champion of Champions – proving it really is the Town of Flowers.

But some town councillors want to take on a new challenge and spread the competition to areas outside of the town centre.

Councillor Alan Mosley is fronting a bid to get some funding from the town council for Britain in Bloom so the town can take part in the Urban Communities category. He has suggested first of all taking it to his own ward of Castlefields and Ditherington as a pilot to test interest.

He said: "Much of the resources are for the flowers in and around the town centre. But my idea is that we should now go for the Britain in Bloom urban category and put some of the resources into this.

"This would make a significant improvement in these areas where a lot of people in the town actually live.

"I think this is a natural progression – it may be challenging, but if we get the interest then we can look to spread it out to areas like Sundorne as well."

This year hundreds of thousands of blooms were planted up and bedded down across the town ready for the critical gaze of the Royal Horticultural Society judges when they visited as part of a national tour, assessing more than 90,000 acres of public green space nationwide.

More than 30,000 blooms alone went to Shrewsbury's show garden in the Dingle. A further 270,000 graced the town.

Councillor Mosley said: "The town looks fantastic throughout the summer and it is a great credit to all our staff. But we should also be looking to improve other areas too."

The plan will be discussed at the Guildhall in December.
