Alan David Evans, 37, appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday accused of stabbing 20-year-old Jermaine Moore during a fight on July 11 this year.

Miss Siobhan Collins, prosecuting, said Evans had been at the Station Hotel in Station Road, Wellington, at about 11.20pm with his dog, then walked to the nearby railway station where he saw Mr Moore with three friends. She said Evans, of Mercia Drive, Leegomery, went up to them to ask for a cigarette and there was some banter.

But she said the mood "soured" when Evans started to use racist language.

"There was a scuffle between the defendant and one of the other men in the group, and during that the defendant believed his dog was kicked," Miss Collins said.

"He then walked back to the Station Hotel. He had been carrying a rucksack and he took it off to get out the dog's lead.

"The group of men decided to spend the evening in Wellington instead of going out and they headed for the Station Hotel.

"When the defendant saw them he took a knife out of his rucksack. He put the butt in his right hand with the blade up his arm.

"As Mr Moore approached, the defendant chose to walk towards him. He was aggressive and was still asking for confrontation," she said.

"As they faced each other he flinched in a way which indicates that Mr Moore would be struck. Mr Moore swung a punch to the defendant's head. At the same time the defendant swung the blade and stabbed Mr Moore, penetrating the kidney.

"The defendant clearly knew what he had done and as soon as he could he took his dog, took his knife and left."

The jury was shown CCTV of the incident from cameras at the pub and the station. Evans has denied charges of wounding with intent and having an article with a blade in a public place. The trial continues.
