The Horsewatch Scheme has been operated by West Mercia Police in Warwickshire and will now be coming to Shropshire.

It operates in a similar way to Neighbourhood Watch in that residents are encouraged to keep an eye on horses in fields nearby and report anything suspicious to police.

Julie Dale is the secretary of Warwickshire Horse Watch, and keeps a list of members so that she can send out alerts, requests for information and other useful messages from police.

West Mercia Police are now working to set a similar scheme up in its area.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police said: "Warwickshire have a very active and successful Horsewatch scheme and a benefit of the West Mercia affiliation with the Warwickshire police is that the excellent Warwickshire Horsewatch is now open for horse owners in the West Mercia area.

"Warwickshire and West Mercia forces also recognise that with rural and equine crime, thieves do not respect borders and what happens in one county soon moved across to another. Therefore, alerts from many counties including Worcestershire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Leicestershire and West Midlands are included on their Facebook page and in their rural and horsewatch crime alerts bulletins."
