Gary Anthony Archer, 29, of Clifford Road, Market Drayton, admitted five charges of rape and two of sexual assault by touching at an earlier hearing.

Mr Robert Edwards, prosecuting, told Shrewsbury Crown Court the young victim was been told not to tell anyone what had happened.

She had been left suffering from nightmares and did not want to be left alone in the company of men, Mr Edwards added.

Jailing him on Friday, Judge Peter Barrie told Archer he hoped the courses he would have to undertake in prison would help ensure he did not commit offences once he is released.

Mr Brendon Reedy, for Archer, said his client had admitted the offences at the earliest opportunity after the girl told an adult of what had happened in July.

Judge Barrie said Archer would have credit for his guilty pleas as it has spared the girl from having to appear in court.

Archer was also put on the sexual offenders register. He will have to serve half the sentence before being released on licence.
