Crowds gathered around the stage and catwalk set up in Sherwood Square next to the Debenhams department store where they were serenaded by models showing off collections at high street stores such as River Island, Monsoon, Dorothy Perkins and Scotts.

Organisers said they were delighted with the "buzz" created yesterday, and said they hoped it would be maintained over the weekend.

Shoppers agreed seeing the clothes being worn by models in the show made it easier to find what they were looking for.

Emma Meredith, marketing assistant at the shopping centre and one of the organisers, said: "There has been all sorts of buzz leading up to the weekend and the first shows have gone very well. We have had really good audiences from the first show right up until the latest ones and we hope to keep it going all weekend.

"Seeing the clothes being worn gives people a choice, clothes never look the same on a hanger than they do on a person and we have got realistic people wearing it.

"People can see what would look good on them and see what the trends are and by showing them off in a fashion show we are saying you could look like this.

"My personal favourites were the Dorothy Perkins collection."

One of the models, Nina Blakemore, from Kemberton, said: "I think it is a great show and it is fantastic that we show all different shapes and sizes because everybody is different. It gives people more of an idea of what they will look like in them. You can get an idea seeing it worn in front of you which is really important."

Sally Mansell, of The Fashion Show Company which put together the show, said the biggest trends for Autumn were pastel wool coats in different styles – including blanket coats, ponchos, capes and macs.

She added: "I have gone through all the trend magazines and I create a trend set for styling shows. We are very pleased with how the show has gone, it will appeal to all sorts of shoppers."
