Tractors roaring in for Shropshire ploughing match

It's going to be a weekend of roaring engines as tractors go head to head in this year's annual ploughing match.

Tern Valley's ploughing event, held in Tern Hill, near Market Drayton, will see about 75 farmers put their tractors to the test in classes to suit their own equipment.

Organiser Andrew Millington said: "It's all about beating the next man and showing off the old fashioned skills.

"On a nice day, we can see about 300 to 400 people coming along, and it is good fun.

"Local farmers regularly come along and we've got about 80 tractors taking part in the ploughing match.

"There are nine classes which are suited to different machinery and ability – we've got some tractors from the 30s and 70s coming as well as some more modern machinery. And with ploughing, it's all about the straight lines and making it as neat as they can – we've got a team of experienced ploughers who are judging."

Other events are also going on through the day, with tractor pulling contests, trailer rides and a fun clay pigeon shoot.

Mr Millington said: "The tractor pulls are always good, they pull a big slab across the field.

"There's a lot of noise, smoke and a lot of power and people really enjoy that part of the day.

"Farmers are more than welcome to bring their own tractors and have a go at the pull themselves."

Families of soldiers based at Tern Hill Army barracks are also hosting a car boot sale at the event to raise money for Soldiers off the Street, a charity which supports ex-service personnel affected by homelessness.

The event begins at 10am on Sunday and is open to all with £3 entry per person.

Should enough money be made to cover the event, any more will go to children's charities, which are yet to be announced.
