The annual tournament organised by the publishers of the Shropshire Star was held at Worfield Golf Club, near Bridgnorth.

The event was the brainchild of Stuart Turner, a management accountant who died suddenly in May 2013, aged 62.

As a lasting testament to his memory, the competition was played for the Stuart Turner Memorial Trophy.

And the £7,800 raised will be shared equally between Promise Dreams and the Georgia Williams Trust.

Promise Dreams was one of the charities supported at Mr Turner's funeral, it makes wishes come true for terminally ill children and their families.

The Georgia Williams Trust raises money for 11-to-18-year-olds in Telford & Wrekin to participate in life-building activities and contribute their communities.

The Shropshire Star launched the charity's text donation scheme in April.

A total of 72 golfers teed off at the 12th event attended by ex-Wolves and England footballer Steve Bull and Sky Sports commentator Don Goodman.

The pair posed for pictures wearing their Georgia Williams Trust wristbands.

Graeme Clifford, Midland News Association operations director said: "The event was a great success. It's probably in the top three totals we have ever raised in the last 12 years.

"I would like to thank all the sponsors and everyone who came out make it a great day."

The golf day began in 2003 and Mr Turner Stuart was heavily involved in the organisation of the event even after he moved to Midland News Association's Wolverhampton office in 2009.

Over the past 12 years the golf day has raised nearly £80,000.

Richard Langton, chairman of the Georgia Williams Trust said: "We are absolutely thrilled that Graeme Clifford organised a charity golf day and chose the trust as one of the beneficiaries.

"It was a real pleasure for me to go down and meet the competitors and have some of their time to explain the work of the trust and where the money they raised is going.

"It was wonderful to have the support of Steve Bull and Don Goodman and we are really proud of our pictures of them with their trust wristbands. We are amazed to see an incredible amount has been raised through the generosity of some fantastic people and we are looking forward to opportunities the money will create for young people in the area."
