Woman flees home as electric blanket catches fire

A woman was forced to flee her home after a faulty electric blanket she was using caught fire.

The blaze broke out in the woman's bedroom in Commercial Street, Newtown, in the early hours of today.

Nobody was injured but smoke damage was caused to her bedroom and her bed was badly damaged.

Steve Rowlands, community safety manager at Newtown Fire Station, said: "It was a lucky escape. The resident was not hurt and we tackled the fire at about 1.30am today.

"The mattress, electric blanket and bed were damaged and the room suffered smoke damage."
