Parliament was recalled today and Prime Minister David Cameron said Britain should respond to the Iraqi government's request for help.

Also known as Islamic State and Isil, Isis has taken over large areas of Syria and Iraq and seized a number of Western hostages.

Telford MP David Wright is backing air strikes in Iraq to "degrade and destroy the capacity of IS" and Wrekin MP Mark Pritchard stressed that they "must be stopped".

Ludlow MP Philip Dunne, who is also the minister for defence equipment, stressed that Britain "should not turn away from what needs to be done".

Glyn Davies, Montgomeryshire MP, said while he backed PM David Cameron, he was "consulting with residents about which way to vote".

IS has threatened to kill British aid volunteer Alan Henning after releasing footage of the killing of another British man, David Haines, earlier this month.

Meanwhile, the British extremist responsible for the on-screen beheading of hostages has reportedly been identified by FBI director James Comey.

Mr Cameron urged that the UK "should not turn away from what needs to be done". He was today opening the debate and Deputy PM Nick Clegg will close it, before an evening vote.

Mr Wright, MP for Telford, said: "I intend to support military action to degrade and destroy the capacity of IS."

Wrekin MP Mark Pritchard declared that IS is "a greater threat than Al Qaeda".

He said: "They are an immediate threat to UK citizens and our strategic interests. They must be stopped."

Mr Davies, Montgomeryshire MP, said: "It is a very different situation to when we were recalled 12 months ago when there was a reluctance to go ahead."

Mr Dunne added: "As ever with our country, when we are threatened we should not turn away from what needs to be done."

Owen Paterson, MP for North Shropshire, said: "I think we have to confront our enemies so I will be voting to support the action. Action needs to be taken against these people because they are a threat."
