Wem riverside housing scheme is opposed

Plans to build homes on a site next to the river in Wem have been opposed amid safety worries.

Councillors objected to the plan for two one-bedroom retirement bungalows on the land adjacent to Sungrove in Wem.

Town councillor Edward Towers said the council strongly objected to the proposals.

He said: "The land is very narrow and close to the river. The river bank is also eroded and flooding could be a problem. We have no issues with developing Wem – but do not develop here."

Councillor Pauline Dee said she was glad to attend the site visit and see the land.

She said: "I am concerned about the narrowness of the land. Also the lack of amenities close by is concerning."

Councillor Steve Davenport agreed and said: "Wem is a great location, but not this one. I have never seen such a small site on unsafe ground."

Committee members unanimously opposed planning permission for the scheme.
