Controversial plans to build a house next to a village pub have been rejected, raising hopes the venue could be saved.

The proposals to build the home and garage in the beer garden of the Cross Keys Inn in Kinnerley, near Oswestry, were thrown out by Shropshire Council's north planning committee.

More than 40 objections had been made by residents, members of Kinnerley Parish Council and members of the Cross Keys action committee, councillors were told.

Charles Green, member of Cross Keys action committee, said: "The owner is intent on selling the pub which we all treasure and love. We have until Christmas to find an owner in order to keep the pub alive.

"In July English Heritage formerly listed the pub as grade II so it is protected."

Applicant Micheal Guest, who owns the Cross Keys Inn, said the pub needed significant investment, which he argued the house would bring. But

councillors felt the plan would cause substantial harm to the listed building and change the historical context of the area.
