The unknown material fell off a vehicle between junction three for Albrighton and junction four for Shifnal.

The spillage caused delays just after 9am today while officers from the Highways Agency worked to clean up the eastbound lane of the motorway.

A Highways Agency spokeswoman said: "We have no details as to what the spillage was but it filled two plastic bags. It had fallen off a vehicle.

"We did the necessary clean up work and left the bags at the side of the road to be collected by other parts of the organisation."

The site was cleared within an hour.
