The freight train broke down between Leominster and Ludlow, blocking the line from the south.

The 11.20am service from Cardiff Central to Holyhead terminated at Hereford as a result, and will not be calling at Ludlow, Craven Arms, Church Stretton, Shrewsbury, Gobowen, Chirk, or any other stations to the north west.

Other services using the line have been delayed.

A spokesman for Arriva Trains Wales said: "Cross Country are conveying passengers via any reasonable route until further notice.

"Arrangements have been made for Arriva Trains Wales rail tickets to be accepted for these journeys.

"London Midland are conveying passengers between Hereford and Birmingham New Street in that direction only until further notice."
