About 350 people took part in the latest mud run at Hawkstone Park - showing the growing popularity of the event.

Participants took on a 10km course which took in the area's sandstone caves, which are usually inaccessible to the public.

Despite good weather there was still plenty of mud around the course in Weston Under Redcastle, near Wem, for runners to contend with, while more than 200 spectators cheered them on from the sidelines.

The mud run series was launched at Hawkstone Park last year and events now take place across the county, including at Lilleshall and Condover.

Saturday's event at Hawkstone Park was the fourth event of this year's series, and was won by David Anderson of Shrewsbury in a time of 42 minutes and 16 seconds.

Tom Meehan, who is one of the organisers who runs Ultimate Fitness Experience with Simon Macdonald, said: "The event was a great success.

"It is a year since we were here last which was the first mud race we had. Since then there has been a whole series of events.

"We had 350 starters which was fantastic and included people from all over the West Midlands who either took part for charity or competitively.

"A couple of hundred people also turned up to watch the event and they created a great atmosphere particularly towards the finish line.

He added: "The mud race is growing in popularity, it is a fantastic event which caters for a variety of people from elite athletes from around the area right down to people who just come to have a bit of fun with friends, so it is a good spectrum of people it caters for."

Organisers used 4x4 vehicles to create a mud-filled course.

The next in the series of five mud races will take place on November 8 at Bomere Lake in Condover, near Shrewsbury.
