Shropshire long distance runner Amy Hughes has moved one step closer to finishing her challenge of completing 53 marathons in 53 days by finishing a run around Gloucester.

The record-breaking 26-year-old has now completed 42 marathons in 42 days, and got some extra help with yesterday's run with some specialist treatment.

Following Sunday's marathon in Swansea, the city's football club offered her the use of its physiotherapy facilities to soothe her aching legs.

She enjoyed a session with Huw Roberts, the club's physiotherapist, before heading for Gloucester yesterday.

Amy, who works as a fitness instructor at the Lion Quays resort near Oswestry, is trying to complete 53 marathons in as many days to raise funds for charity.

She said her daily routine has now become fixed.

"Once I've finished one marathon we have to get straight in the camper van and travel to the next city, and then find a restaurant to eat at," she said. "So by the time we get to the hotel I only have about an hour to relax until I need to go to bed and get up early again for the next day.

"When I got on the scales three weeks ago I found I'd put on more than half a stone. My legs feel bigger, so I'm hoping it's all muscle."

She was running in Hereford today before heading to Worcester tomorrow, Coventry on Friday, Birmingham on Saturday and Wolverhampton on Sunday.

Next week she will be heading back into Shropshire for runs in Shrewsbury on Monday and her home town of Oswestry on Wednesday.

Amy's challenge began in Chester on August 6 and among the places she has already completed marathons in are Liverpool, Lancaster, Edinburgh, Newcastle, York, Norwich, London and Bristol, where she completed her 1,000th mile.

Amy has raised more than £14,300 for the Isabelle Lottie Foundation.

The foundation was set up by three-year-old Izzy's parents Gareth and Rebecca Wynne, from Wrexham, after the youngster was diagnosed with medulloblastoma – a specific type of brain tumour which mainly affects children between the ages of three and eight.
