Great Scot! Have your say in the big debate . . . in Telford

The English may not have a say in whether Scotland remains part of the United Kingdom - but that hasn't stopped staff at a garden centre giving people the chance to have their say.

Visitors to Lakeside Plant and Garden Centre in Telford will be asked to decide where they stand on one of the biggest political elections in the Union's history and post ballot papers at a mock polling station.

The poll will take place on Thursday to coincide with the Scottish independence referendum. The 'no' vote will be represented by Scott Adams, of Telford Exotic Zoo, and the 'yes' vote a 'Scots Pine'.

Kevin Turley, who works at the garden centre in Woodhouse Lane, Priorslee, said: "With the Scottish referendum this week, Lakeside and Green Fields Farm Shop are holding a "Scott-ch" vote themselves.

"It will be Scott Adams taking on the "Scots pine" in a battle and you can vote at Lakeside this Thursday.

"Scott represents the 'no' vote because he brings all of the animal kingdom together at his exotic zoo in Donnington while the 'yes' vote is the pine, which has its roots in Scotland."

Green Fields Farm Shop in Donnington will be offering samples on the day of Scotch eggs, Scottish cheddar and green chilli jam with, of course, Scotch bonnet chillies in."

Mr Turley said: "It is just a bit of fun. We are usually a polling station for the general elections and other local votes so we thought we'd hold a referendum this week.

"It is hoped that more people will come and vote at our station in the future.

"We've had 70 likes on Facebook, so hopefully lots of people will get involved.

"We have a lot to do with Scott Adams at the zoo so it is great to involve him in the fun event."

The results of the mock poll will be announced on Friday.
