Smoke could be seen from streets away after a fire broke out at a fish and chip shop in Telford.

It started in ventilation equipment at Ocean's Fish Bar in Hordley Road, Wellington, causing the restaurant to become heavily smoke logged. But firefighters managed to tackle the fire before it spread and caused any major damage.

Craig Jackson, watch manager at Wellington Fire Station, said crews could see smoke billowing from the restaurant as they drove to the scene to put out the fire, which was discovered shortly after 5pm yesterday.

He said: "We were called and on our way there we could see smoke rising into the sky from streets away so we knew it was a live incident to tackle.

"On arrival we found that an extraction unit on the deep fat fryer was on fire and I quickly got the crews to use a covering jet, a hose reel jet and small gear along with a thermal imaging camera.

"There was a lot of smoke that we had to let out and then we had to hammer away at the walls and roof to ensure that the fire hadn't spread anywhere."

Mr Jackson said: "The fire luckily didn't cause very much damage and the owner seemed thankful to realise that it was lucky that it was not much worse."

Nobody from the fish bar was available to comment.
