At 100-years-old most of us would want to be at home, putting up our feet and enjoying retirement - but not for one man who still volunteers every week at his local charity shop.

Stanley Parker, who celebrates his 100th birthday today (September 9), still volunteers at the Age UK charity shop in Market Drayton every Monday and Wednesday.

Mr Parker has been going to the store every week for the last 14 years to help them get clothes in a good state to sell from the rack.

He said: "I come here and I steam and press the clothes which the ladies here then sell.

"They are a great croup of volunteers who work here and I really enjoy coming and seeing them.

"I am very lucky and have family who are lovable and look after me, but there are many people my age who are out there lonely and if I can help in anyway then I am pleased to do so."

The father of two, grandfather of five and great grandfather of seven, takes the walk from his house on Maple Close in the town down to Cheshire Street twice a week, but that's not the only exercise he gets.

He said: "My key to living a long life is being active.

"I have always been a keen sportsman and when I was younger I was involved in cricket, athletics, rugby, cycling and swimming.

"I still go walking twice a day now."

Mr Parker's daughter Pauline Bailey, said: "It means a lot to dad. It gets him out of the house.

"He loves coming here for a chat having a cup of tea and a biscuit and helping out. He really does look after himself and gets out and about and coming here helps him do that."

Age UK is the country's largest charity dedicated to helping everyone make the most of later life.

People like Mr Parker who volunteer in the store help raise money so that the charity can try and help as many older people as possible.

Debbie Mattherson, Age UK store manager in Market Drayton, said: "I have been manager here since February. When I first heard that there was someone volunteering here who was nearly 100 I didn't know what to expect.

"But Stanley is fantastic and has marvelled me. He always rings and always comes here to help.

"It does just show that what we do here at Age UK can make a difference to people."

Mr Parker will be celebrating his birthday with his family today.
