Illegal travellers site set up

Travellers have set up an illegal camp at a beauty spot - preventing walkers and visitors from accessing the car park.

A camp was discovered at Granville Country Park near Muxton, Telford, yesterday morning.

The park, close to Shropshire Golf Club, has been totally blocked to walkers and sightseers as the travellers have taken over the whole car park.

Brad Jones, who regularly walks in the area, said: "There is no way through the car park, completely blocked.

"I am very infuriated, yet another camp in Telford this time its spoiling our walk with the dogs."

Mr Jones said he had reported the travellers presence to West Mercia Police.

Emily Knighley, a spokeswoman for Telford & Wrekin Council, said: "They have been served notice and if they are still there on Monday morning we will begin legal proceedings."

It comes after travellers set up camp on a patch of land close to the Welcome Break services off junction 4 of the M54 near Shifnal.

The illegal camp appeared on August 11 this week close to the M54 junction four and steps are now being taken to remove the assembled caravans and animals as quickly as possible.

The travellers' appearance comes just weeks after they were last moved from the site. They were last seen near the Welcome Break Service Station in May, after moving from land off Newport Road.

In October last year, Telford was blighted by illegal camps, which sprang up in four different locations over two weeks.

Travellers were seen in Halesfield five and the Ironbridge Park and Ride Service.
