Ice challenge for council leader

Pop stars have done it, footballers have done it – and now Shropshire Council leader Keith Barrow has got wet for charity.

He was the latest in a long line of fundraisers to take part in the ice bucket challenge, where brave souls are challenged to have a bucket of freezing water thrown over their heads in the name of charity.

And while most people are able to endure the soaking in the privacy of their own garden, Councillor Barrow took on his challenge in public during the half-time break at last night'sCorbett Sports Welsh Premier League football game between Oswestry's The New Saints and Rhyl.

The council leader joked that he would imagine there were a long queue of political opponents in Shropshire who would be lining up to see the soaking.

He said: "I would guess there might be quite a few people who will be more than happy to see me getting a bucket of water thrown over my head.

"It is something different because normally we walk about in suits and ties all day so it is nice to have a bit of fun."

Councillor Barrow was challenged to take part in the fundraiser by The New Saints' owner Mike Harris.

He said: "Mike Harris took on the challenge and challenged me to do it."

The council leader was all smiles after the challenge, which raised money for motor neurone disease.

He said the research work was close to his heart, adding: "I had a cousin, John Barrow, who died from motor neurone disease so I know the impact it can have.

"It is a great cause and the challenge is all about raising money for charity."
