Ambulance crews get 255 calls in a year to one Shropshire home

Ambulance crews were called to the same Shropshire address 255 times in a year but only 37 of the 999 call-outs led to a hospital visit, new figures reveal.

The town centre property in Shrewsbury featured in the West Midlands Ambulance Service's top 10 most frequently visited addresses.

The WMAS figures, which cover the period from the start of July last year to the end of June this year, exclude calls from nursing homes and care institutions.

The ambulance service has stressed that while the number may appear to add up to a "misuse" of resources, some people suffered from complex disorders which require emergency intervention on a regular basis.

The Shrewsbury address had the third most call-outs in a year across the West Midlands area.

Top of the list was a property in Birmingham which was the source of 661 emergency calls with only 12 leading to hospital visits.

Second was an address in Newcastle-under-Lyme which saw 396 call-outs with 77 resulting in trips to hospital.

Murray MacGregor, spokesman for WMAS, said: "The trust is aware of a number of high volume service users who sometimes call the ambulance service every day or more.

"Some people do suffer from complex health-related disorders that at times require emergency intervention on a regular basis and although this may appear to be a "misuse" of resources it is indeed entirely appropriate and embraces the ethos of delivery of high quality patient care."

An address in Wolverhampton was seventh with 146 call-outs and 107 journeys to hospital followed by an address in Walsall with 136 emergency calls and four hospitalisations. And 10th was another home in Wolverhampton where 134 emergency calls were made with only 29 resulting in hospital trips.
