Thieves forced the back door of the Bell Inn on the A458 at Cross Houses while the tenants slept upstairs.

Licensee Diane Briscoe awoke the next morning to find the bolt broken off the door and a drawer missing from the till.

She said: "We were asleep upstairs and we didn't hear anything.

"It was in the morning at about 8.30am that I found the back door had been pushed open and the bolt had come off.

"I went straight to the till and found the drawer missing. There was about £500 in notes and coins in it."

The empty drawer was later found over a hedge on the opposite side of the road.

Anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area between 1am and 6am on Saturday should call police on 101.
