Members of Shropshire Council's south planning committee yesterday threw out the proposals for Hill Cottage, in Clive Avenue, Church Stretton.

The request for outline approval of three detached houses with garages was seen by members to be "over development", even though they had been recommended for approval by officers, subject to conditions.

During their meeting at Shirehall yesterday members of the committee heard there were concerns about drainage from the development.

Councillor David Turner said: "I am concerned about this development because it is within the conservation area. I think three houses is too many.

"The site is very elevated and, while it will mean lovely houses, it may ruin everyone else's views."

Councillor Nigel Hartin agreed.

He said: "It doesn't fit in the entrance to a conservation area.

"One dwelling in this garden site would fit better into the street scene and conservation area."

Councillor Andy Boddington said: "I think this is over development."

The plans were unanimously refused by councillors, but the developers were encouraged to submit a smaller scheme in future.
