Saturday's Minsterley Show, near Shrewsbury, featured horse displays, agricultural, horticultural and produce competitions, as well as the most trade stands ever.

Barry Conde, show chairman, said:

"It's the same old favourites which people really enjoy, and I think people look forward to the social side of things too – lots of people meet up only once a year and they come to the show to see each other.

"The dog show is a real favourite and there have been some great entries in the horticultural tent this year." There was a high standard of cakes and jams vying for prizes in the horticultural tent.

Joy Vance, chief horticultural steward, said: "I don't know how, but every year they bring the standards higher and higher.

"We've had some really good entries in the floral art class and the cookery classes always do well."

And for many visitors, it was the first time at the show.

Michaela Wheeler, 44, from Baschurch, was at the show with her husband and two children Hattie, 11, and Jasmin, seven.

Mrs Wheeler said: "It's been a really nice day and we've been looking round the stalls and trying all the home made food - the brownies are fantastic."

Caroline Davies, 61, and husband Ted, 67, from Bicton in Shrewsbury, are show regulars.

Mrs Davies said: "We've been four or five years in a row now and we absolutely love it.

"Being local, it's a great day out for us and it's a bit bigger than usual this year."

Mr Davies said: "It's just so friendly, I think that's why we keep coming back."
