Overnight work on the Emstrey and Preston Boats islands will not start until an hour after the final whistle, the Highways Agency has confirmed.

Fans should not be delayed to and from matches against Accrington Stanley on Tuesday, Carlisle United on September 16 or Bury on October 21.

The Highways Agency scheme is aimed at improving the layout of both islands with traffic lights to ease congestion, especially at peak times.

Work at Preston Boats junction will retain the existing roundabout and introduce signals at all approaches.

These will be 'smart' signals that read the demands of traffic on the junction approaches and alter timings automatically.

It will introduce 'free flow' lanes on the A5 westbound and A49 to A5 eastbound arms, removing a significant volume of traffic from the junction.

Emstrey island will see several approaches widened and the widening of the island itself to provide three lanes with traffic lights.
