Drivers found themselves caught in gridlock on the A483 by the Post House roundabout on the outskirts of Chester.

Trapped in their cars for more than two hours, drivers and passengers resorted to walking along the dual carriageway to stretch their legs.

Motorists said they missed appointments, football games and the racing fixtures. The route is also used by those travelling to airports at Liverpool and Manchester and to the ferries at Holyhead.

Tom Brookes from Penley near Ellesmere said: "I was dropping a motorbike off in Rhyl which would take about an hour-and-a-half . I did not expect a five-hour journey. It took four hours to travel from the Ruabon junction to the Chester roundabout."

Roger Colemere from Ellesmere said his sisters, Sue and Jayne had been on their way to Haydox Races but had missed the races.
