The lorry's fuel tank was also fractured and leaked after it overturned just off the A5 at Dobbies Island in Shrewsbury at 6.15pm yesterday.

It is not known how seriously the lorry driver was hurt, but he was treated by paramedics at the scene.

Watch manager Chris White, of Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Fire control received calls reporting a road traffic collision involving a heavy goods vehicle near Dobbies Island.

"Four appliances from Shrewsbury were sent to the scene with the first arriving on the A49 Hereford Road.

"The driver was released prior to the arrival of the fire service and was being treated by ambulance staff. Fire crews then began dealing with a fractured fuel tank using grab packs and buckets."

Motorist Adam Grffiths said : "I followed this lorry from Ludlow and was immediately behind the vehicle when it overturned. It had come from the A49 and went straight on at the roundabout and overturned as it went around it.

"The driver also got out of his own accord and was not injured severely, and was checked over my paramedics on scene. "

Thomas Mottram, from Shrewsbury, who drove past the accident, said: "It was an incredible sight and the side of the loy looked crumpled.

"There was police, fire and ambulance at the scene but surprisingly everything was moving really well and there was very little in the way of hold-ups, certainly by 7pm."
