Britain in Bloom judges were in town yesterday (WEDS) and visited to the Dingle and various locations around the town for a second, and final, round of judging when the town's many floral displays were moderated against exacting criteria.

The experts judged Shrewsbury for the national heats of the RHS Britain in Bloom contest, as well as the ultimate Bloom accolade – the Champion of Champions award.

The town, which won the best small city award at last year's finals, is up against Ahoghill from Ulster, the City of London, Glenrothes in Scotland and Woolton in Liverpool.

Town Clerk Helen Ball said: "The judges seemed to be highly impressed with our Town of Flowers and feedback was really positive, especially in regards to our strong partnership working and horticultural practice.

"The show-stopper was of course the Dingle which was shown off to its very best in the lovely sunshine.

"All we can do now is cross our fingers and hope that everyone''s hard work has paid off. In the meantime, we will be busy preparing to host the regional Heart of England results in September, with the Britain in Bloom Champion of Champions title announced in October."

Shrewsbury's floral displays are tended to by Shrewsbury Town Council's grounds maintenance team. All plants are grown at the council's own greenhouses from seeds and plugs, with more than 30,000 blooms alone apportioned for Shrewsbury's 365-days-a-year show garden in the Dingle.
