Ian Smith, coroner for Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire, has been informed of the death of Georgina Oakley, of Deer Park Road in Wellington. He has launched his own independent investigation and is waiting for police to gather evidence before opening an inquest.

Arrangements for the funeral are yet to be announced.

The teenager died in a car accident on Baddeley Green Lane in Stoke-on-Trent last Wednesday (July 23) at 4.20am. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 28-year-old woman, named locally as her sister Gema Marsh, and the 23-year-old driver of the car remain in a critical condition at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, according to Staffordshire Police.

Police are trying to trace witnesses who saw the car, a black Vauxhall Vectra, in the moments before the crash to come forward.

A police spokesman said earlier this week: "An investigation into the circumstances of the collision is ongoing and we are re-appealing for witnesses, or anyone who saw the vehicle travelling beforehand to come forward."

Anyone with information about the accident is being asked to call Staffordshire Police on 101.
