Council bosses say two columns on the bandstand at Cae Glas Park in Oswestry have distress fractures.

They say although there is no immediate danger to the public, the repair work does need to be done before the winter.

Town council facilities manager Glenys Davies says in a report to councillors: "Two of the cast iron columns on the bandstand have distress fractures in them.

"Barrie Whitmore, architect and building surveyor, was contacted for advice and he in turn asked two local blacksmiths for their opinions on what remedial action could be taken.

"Following a survey of the columns it was decided that it was unnecessary to remove the columns for repair and that four decorative columns be manufactured to clamp around the columns, one near the base, the other approximately two thirds the way up, to help prevent any further deterioration and to help pull the structures back together."

The report says two quotes have been given by two blacksmiths for the work, one at £1,150 and the other at £1,630.

Councillors will be asked at a meeting of their amenities committee on Wednesday to accept the quote of £1,150 as the most cost effective solution for the repair.

The amenities meeting starts at 7pm and will be held at the Guildhall in Oswestry.
