The woman had to be cut out of the car by firefighters after the crash, which happened just before 3.20pm yesterday.

Two other children who had been in the car escaped uninjured.

Claire Brown, a spokeswoman for the West Midlands Ambulance Service, said three ambulances, a paramedic area support officer and a BASICS doctor were dispatched to the scene.

She said: "Crews arrived on scene to find a vehicle that has collided with the central reservation.

"The car had been carrying a woman and four children at the time of the incident.

"The driver, a woman in her 30's, was treated for seat belt injuries, an arm injury and neck pain. The woman was immobilised and emergency services worked together to safely extricate her from the vehicle as a precaution.

"The four children were assessed at the scene. Two were treated for minor injuries whilst the other two were found to be uninjured.

"All three casualties were conveyed to Princess Royal Hospital for further assessment and treatment."

The car collided with the central reservation between junction five for Telford Central and junction six for Ketley.

The Highways Agency have said the accident entirely closed the westbound carriageway of the motorway to allow crews to get to the accident, and also closed one lane of the eastbound carriageway.

Two lanes were reopened at 5pm, but the central lanes remained closed in both directions into the evening to allow for emergency repairs to the central reservation to be carried out.

Roads around Trench, Ketley, Lawley, Dawley and Arleston are experienced heavy traffic during the closure as it was diverted away from M54.
