A sewer that collapsed has brought chaos to Shrewsbury after it caused the surface of one of its busiest roads to sag.

The Mount, in Shrewsbury, had to be closed after residents noticed the dip in the road. Authorities began an emergency investigation, and put diversions in place.

The stretch between Sheldon and Frankwell Island was finally reopened last night after workmen repaired the sewer on one of the hottest days of the year.

Today temporary traffic lights were up, causing more delays until at least tomorrow.

Mike Williams, network manager for Severn Trent Water, said: "Residents rang in because they were concerned after noticing a dip in the road. We have been investigating and Shropshire Council closed the road due to health and safety concerns."

Severn Trent apologised for the hold-ups following the closure of one of the busiest roads into the town. A spokeswoman said: "We discovered a section of collapsed sewer, which we repaired yesterday afternoon. Today we'll be re-laying the road, so if all goes well things should be back to normal by the end of the day. We're sorry if this work has caused any delays. It's all been done to keep everyone safe and make sure our customers' loos work as normal."

Councillor Ann Chebsey, who represents the area,

called for an investigation to see if there is a wider problem with the sewers.

She said: "I am really not pleased it has had to come to this, that we've had an emergency road closure as a result of the problems. There have been issues in this area before and it is a major route into town."
