Severn Trent are investigating the sewers at the junction of Halfren road on The Mount, which has been closed as a safety precaution.

The route is shut off from Halfren Road to the Frankwell island as workmen investigate the problem.

Traffic lights were set up yesterday evening.

Sarah McArthur, a spokeswoman for Severn Trent said: "We've made great progress with our work today. We've now discovered a section of collapsed sewer, which we're repairing this afternoon.

"We expect this evening we'll be able to reopen the road with traffic lights in place overnight. Tomorrow we'll be relaying the road, so if all goes well things should be back to normal by the end of the day.

“We’re sorry if this work has caused any delays, it’s all been done to keep everyone safe and make sure our customers loo’s continue to work as normal.”

A team from Severn Trent dug through the tarmac on one of the hottest days of the year, and it is hoped it will beopen by early evening.

Diversions are currently in place, after concerned residents noticed a change in the road service.

Mike Williams, network manager for Shropshire, who was at the scene said: "Residents noticed a change in the road, what we call a depression.

"We have been called out to investigate it and find out the cause, and Shropshire Council thought it best to close the road until we are absolutely sure it is safe.

"We would hope that it will be open by early tonight but we can't say for sure."
