Dodgy Shrewsbury dentist gets struck off

A dishonest dentist who took out teeth at a Shropshire practice when the patient should have gone to hospital has been struck off.

Robin Maxwell Pope also strung out treatments to claim cash he was not entitled to from the NHS, a professional conduct committee heard.

Pope had admitted a string of charges relating to 11 patients at Monkmoor Dental Practice in Shrewsbury, where he was principal dentist between 2010 and 2012.

The General Dental Council decided to erase his name from its register in a judgement last night.

The conduct committee proved Pope had prescribed antibiotics without justification and without consulting or examining patients.

Pope made "inadequate and barely legible notes", did not take full medical histories or examine his patients properly, the hearing found. He had also failed to diagnose gingival calculus or identify potential carious lesions.

The committee proved Pope had taken out two molar teeth when the procedure should have been done in hospital.

The committee's finding said: "The potential consequences for the patient of your lack of awareness of the state of his teeth and roots could have been very serious."

Pope went on to make dishonest claims for one man's treatment and he split another patient's treatment over five appointments when he should have done it in two.

In total the hearing found 20 of Pope's UDA claims to have been "knowingly and dishonestly made".

It added: "In relation to all of these matters, you showed a flagrant disregard for the standards, for the best interests of his patients and for the status of registered dentists."
